- Political power: This is the type of power excised by a government in steering the affairs of a state. This type of power which resides in the three organs of government is derived from the constitution.
- Physical power: this type of power which is also known as naked power involve the use physical force to compel obedience the application of physical power may cause pains, injury or even death.
- Economic power: This type of power involves the use of economic resources at a person's disposal in controlling the actions of others. Those who possess economic power sometimes influence the policies of government. Economic power is more visible in capitalist state.
- Military power: According to the former Chinese leader Mao Tse Tung "power emanate from the barrel of gun". This type of power is excised by those who control the instrument of sanction like the armed forces, police etc.
